Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB

Evan Scribner (AA): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
I am certain we will see Evan Scribner in big league uniform at some point. That said, Pelzer and Inman have higher upsides. It is good to see productivity in playoff situations from all three hurlers.

Dykstra came on strong to end the season. It will be interesting to see if he reverts to his ugly 75% of season numbers or if he builds on his fantastic final month.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Nathan Freiman (SS): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, BB

Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Where do you rank Chris Fetter? He has pitched in short-season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne and has a combined 1.66 ERA. He throws in the low-90’s (legit but not “write home” velocity) and he’s taller and thus pitches at that downward plane that pitching experts love… On the other hand, he’s older (turns 24 this December) and will have to move through the system quickly. The system has gotten a lot deeper this year (with the addition of 2009 draftees, and development of 2008 draftees and 2008 international free agent acquisitions, and trade booty). Last year I rated Anthony Bass 23. I would argue that Fetter is comparable this year to Anthony Bass last year but because of increased depth, Fetter will not rank that high…

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Simon Castro is too often overlooked. I saw both Kevin Goldstein and John Sickels refer to him as a “sleeper prospect” this year. Now if you said that last year, when he toiling in the relative obscurity of the Northwest League, I get it. But he is a 6’5” power righty that has a FB that touches 95 and has led the Midwest League in strikeouts virtually all season (142 in 123.1 innings).

Padres MiLB, July 31-August 2, Players of the Day; Weekend Edition
This just in – or maybe you already heard – the Padres traded away former Cy Young winner, Jake Peavy. I, for one, am quite happy with the haul they got. Normally, when you’re in salary-shedding mode, if you do not kick in cash to get rid of a player, you get less in return. In the Padres’ Peavy-trade, they contributed zero cash and got 4 pitchers who each throw well into the 90’s:
Aaron Poreda – could be a #2-3 starter, throws an easy 92-4 FB and regularly touches 95-6 from the left side (has touched 98-100 in past) – doesn’t give up hits, but doesn’t strike out as many as “stuff” suggests he should – should at least develop into high-leverage reliever (future closer?)
Clayton Richards – throws low-mid 90’s 2-seam FB, curve, and iffy/developing change – solid upside is a #3 starter but could easily slot in nicely as 4-5 starter
Dexter Carter – A touch old for his level (22 in Low-A) but thoroughly dominating his level – Carter features a high 80’s-low 90’s FB and leads the SAL in strikeouts
Adam Russell – Features a mid-90’s+ fastball but doesn’t control it well (career MiLB 3.8 BB/9) if he can harness the heat a little better he will be an interesting arm to add to the bullpen mix
With the quantity of quality arms the White Sox had to give up to get Jake Peavy, they could end up on the wrong side of the talent ledger on this trade. Jake is an immense talent, but I am quite excited about the bounty his trade wrought.

Simon Castro rolls on… I re-tweeted (sorry, it’s a technical term) a post from Padres Dir. of International Scouting, Randy Smith (@ResPadres – if you’re into the whole Twitter thing, you can follow me @pffriberg) that noted Castro’s last start (the dominant 5.0 IP, 1 H, 9 SO game) was executed with only 55 pitches – dominate and efficient! Jaff Decker hit his 12th HR Friday evening. Decker is now hitting: .290/.441/.525. He is 2nd in OPS (you could even say he leads in OPS – James Darnell, now in the CAL League is the only player listed ahead of Jaff), 7th in HR, and 3rd in walks (behind teammate Allan Dykstra and Darnell).

If you aren’t stoked about the future of the Padres, you aren’t paying attention. Geoff Young and I drove to Lake Elsinore Saturday and watched the Storm play. On the way home we discussed what players would be manning all 8 starting fielding positions, 5 starting pitchers, and a closer for the 2013 Padres (we allowed any player in the organization – as well un-signed draftees). You can go at least 2-deep at every position (except pitchers) and have what looks to be a solid club. Obviously they are not all going to pan out, but nor are they all going to flame out. I’ll post mine tomorrow… What’s your 2013 Padres lineup look like?

Five Questions with Wynn Pelzer
Wynn Pelzer was drafted by the Padres in 9th round of the 2007 draft. He did not pitch that summer since he was recovering from a broken knee-cap from a line-drive off the bat of Allan Dykstra. In just more than 215 professional innings, Wynn has 3.83 ERA. He is one of the harder throwing pitchers in the system, and all-around good guy.
PadresRunDown: So the first question has to be obvious, what was it like meeting Allan Dykstra once you found out you were both in the same organization?
Wynn Pelzer: It was cool. I just looked at him at pointed at my knee and gave him a funny look. We laughed about if after he apologized.
PRD: Cedric Hunter told PRD readers that you are the funniest guy he’s played with, where did you get your humor and what kinds of pranks have you played on teammates?
WP: I get humor from everywhere and I don’t really do pranks because I don’t want it to come back around to me. So I just stick to the spur of the moment stuff. Gotta be quick in the locker room.
PRD: I was told that you were a catcher in high school and didn’t pitch until college. Was the transition something you were excited about or did it take some getting used to?
WP: I was primarily a catcher in high school. I pitched enough to kind of have an idea but calling games gave me an idea of how to pay attention to hitters and make adjustments from pitch to pitch. It was hard because I enjoyed playing everyday. I’m still struggling with it now sometimes.
PRD: Do you feel having been a catcher gives you a greater understanding of what your catcher is requesting from you?
WP: It is more for me because I can relate to him how I might want him to set up or what I can see from the mound because I’ve paid attention to hitters’ tendencies before.
PRD: First thing that comes to mind, what was the craziest, “Oh my God, I can’t believe I just saw that!” moment on the baseball field?
WP: The retarded 33-18 game we had against High Desert a couple of weeks ago. 4 hours of batting practice. Glad I wasn’t pitching but I was doing the game chart and I might have gone thru a small notebook. Also in college we hit 5 consecutive home runs in a game. Everybody was tested for [Performance Enhancing Drugs's] after the game.

Nice!
Thanks Wynn!

Hitter(s) of the Day
Jason Hagerty (SS): 1-2, 2B, 3 BB
Drew Cumberland (Low-A): 3-3, 4 R, 2 BB, SB
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 3-4, 2B, 3 R, RBI, BB
Sawyer Carroll (High-A): 2-3, R, BB
Danny Payne (High-A): 2-2, 2B, BB, 2 CS
Pitcher of the Day
Mat Latos (AA): 5.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR – perfect through 5
Commentary
There were a few other deserving pitching performances of the day:
Nicholas Greenwood (SS): 6.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 SO, 0 HR
Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
…but Latos’ performance deserved to stand by itself.
By the way, make sure you’re aware of why Latos is pitching in such short spurts… As we have discussed before, Latos pitched 56 innings after signing with the Padres in the 2007 season, then an oblique injury limited him to 56 innings in 2008. So far this season the right-hander has notched 72 innings. Because of Latos’ yearly inning totals, the organization wants to limit his innings.
I had a chance to meet Pelzer when I was at the Lake Elsinore game Sunday night. I look forward to watching his career progress.
Drew Cumberland is quietly having a very nice season and yet at the same time experiencing the same injury issues that plagued him in 2008. Through 84 games he has played only 48. However, when he has been on the field, he has performed. The athletic shortstop is hitting .304/.391/.408 with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 home runs, 25 walks and 25 strikeouts, and is a perfect 15-0 in stolen base attempts.

Decker & Pelzer on BA PHS
Low-A OF Jaff Decker and High-A RHP Wynn Pelzer each made this week’s Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet in the “In the Team Photo” honorable mention catagory.
Low Class A Fort Wayne LF Jaff Decker (Padres) hasn’t had any problems acclimating to the Midwest League. Decker hit .409/.480/.727 (9-for-22) with two home runs this week, upping his season line to .320/.490/.613 in 75 at-bats. The 19-year-old Decker didn’t make his season debut with the TinCaps until April 24, but he’s already tied for the team lead in home runs with five, and he ranks fifth in RBIs with 16…
and…
Only Mat Latos and Simon Castro, among Padres farmhands, can challenge high Class A Lake Elsinore RHP Wynn Pelzer for the distinction of having the most arm strength in the organization. Thus far, the 22-year-old has handled his assignment to the California League with aplomb, starting twice this week and going a clean 2-0, 1.88, while allowing three runs on seven hits while racking up 20 strikeouts and three walks in 14 1/3 innings. On the season, his 51 strikeouts rank third in the Cal League, and his 3.55 ERA ranks seventh…
Decker, in my opinion, is one of the best young hitters in all the minor leagues. And I won’t go that high in my praise for Pelzer, but I will say that not only is just a step behind Latos in terms of arm strength, but he’s also not that far off Latos’ pace in terms of upside.
Unfortunately, as I pointed out in last night’s post, Kyle Blanks is quite cold lately. He headlined BA’s “Not-So Hot Sheet.”
Kyle Blanks, lf/1b, Padres: While it’s probably not a pure cause-and-effect relationship, Blanks, since playing his first game in left field for Triple-A Portland on May 10, has gone 6-for-43 (.140) with a lone extra-base hit (a home run). The 22-year-old also has struck out at an uncharacteristically high rate in that span—18 times in 43 at-bats, or 42 percent of the time. Kudos to Blanks for his willingness to play the outfield, where he hasn’t roamed since 2005, but he won’t be in line for a big league callup until he snaps out of his funk. This week, Blanks batted .087/.250/.087 (2-for-23) with five walks and seven strikeouts.
