Happy Birthday Austin! Sunday was my oldest son’s 8th birthday…
Hitter(s) of the Day
Nathan Freiman (SS): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, BB
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 3-5, 3B, R, 3 RBI
Cedric Hunter (AA): 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI,
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Chris Fetter (Low-A): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Where do you rank Chris Fetter? He has pitched in short-season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne and has a combined 1.66 ERA. He throws in the low-90’s (legit but not “write home” velocity) and he’s taller and thus pitches at that downward plane that pitching experts love… On the other hand, he’s older (turns 24 this December) and will have to move through the system quickly. The system has gotten a lot deeper this year (with the addition of 2009 draftees, and development of 2008 draftees and 2008 international free agent acquisitions, and trade booty). Last year I rated Anthony Bass 23. I would argue that Fetter is comparable this year to Anthony Bass last year but because of increased depth, Fetter will not rank that high…

Will Inman (AA): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Nathan Freiman is coming along nicely, after a slow start (.633 OPS in June & .775 OPS in July) Nate has an .810+ OPS in his professional debut. What is really interesting however is that the big right-hander has struggled against left-handed pitching (.207/.281/.293).
Chris Fetter now has a combined 1.80 ERA over 60 innings between Eugene and Fort Wayne.
Allan Dykstra hit .319/.432/.505 in August.

Craig Italiano (High-A): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Jerry Sullivan has been up and down since beginning his pro career… On the good side of the ledger: 53 strikeouts in 46.2 innings and .220 BAA… On the bad side: 5 HR and 23 walks. You cannot walk hitters and give up a lot of home runs and expect to succeed.
How about the combined night Bass and Italiano had?

Commentary
Two gems to start Reyes’ professional career…
Simon Castro had two disaster starts in August (4 ER in 3 IP on 8/8 and 6 ER in 5 IP on 8/13) and even so, in his last 10 starts he has a 3.20 ERA. Is Castro the Padres best non-Latos pitching prospect?

Hitter(s) of the Day
Drew Cumberland (Low-A): 3-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI
Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 2-3, RBI, BB

Steve Garrison (High-A): 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Wade LeBlanc (AAA): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Allan Dykstra is batting .333 over last 10 games and has 8 hits in 15 at-bats with 5 walks in last 5 games.
The Padres have kept Anthony Bass on a short leash in High-A to limit his innings. His previous CAL League innings high was 4.0 and until Saturday, he never had more than 3 strikeouts in a game and worst of all he had allowed more walks than strikeouts. Saturday was a breakthrough outing. He limited his walks, he got a few punchouts, and he remained difficult to hit. Bass doesn’t deserve consideration with the top non-Latos pitching prospects (Poreda, Castro, and Portillo), but he is in the conversation among the next group and may even top that next list.

Pitcher(s) of the Day
Michael Watt (Low-A): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Watt is an enigma. He constantly has outings that are just blah… But then every once in awhile, he’ll have these, “Wow” performances. And overall his numbers are solid (Low-A statistics):
3.65 ERA in 111.0 IP with 102 H and 5 HR allowed and a 38/82 BB/SO
…Don’t forget, Michael is still just 20 years old.

Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Simon Castro is too often overlooked. I saw both Kevin Goldstein and John Sickels refer to him as a “sleeper prospect” this year. Now if you said that last year, when he toiling in the relative obscurity of the Northwest League, I get it. But he is a 6’5” power righty that has a FB that touches 95 and has led the Midwest League in strikeouts virtually all season (142 in 123.1 innings).

Commentary
Logan Forsythe is having the kind of season (in San Antonio) that shows why it is such a tough place to hit:
.338/.425/.515 on the road (along the lines of what he did in Cal League)
.232/.309/.333 at home (tough to deal with wind blowing in at home)

Ernesto Frieri (AA): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR
Commentary
It wasn’t “Pitcher of the Day” worthy performance, but it is noteworthy (mostly because of the walks/stirkeouts):
Adys Portillo (Rookie): 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO, 0 HR (2 WP)
I just don’t know what to make of Dan Robertson. On one hand, he is quite old for his level (already 24, 23), on the other hand, he won the MVP of the Northwest League last year and is hitting a robust .314/.402/.433 in the difficult Midwest League. More than 25% of his hits go for extra-bases (18 doubles, 3 triples, and 5 home runs), he’s walked more than he has struck out (40/39), and he’s decently proficient as a base-stealer (15 SB, 7 CS). I can’t rank him that highly because of his age, but I am definitely watching and rooting for him – besides, Dan and I share a birthday!
Mikey’s Famous! After destroying the Texas League (.376/.441/.559), Mike came back to earth in AAA (.280/.363/.401). I still think Baxter can be a solid utility player. He can easily handle both corner outfield roles and has been learning first base as well.

Pitcher of the Day
Will Inman (AA): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR – 1st start after demotion
Commentary
Adam Russell made his organizational debut tonight pitching a scoreless, hitless inning while allowing one walk.
Monday was August 3, 2009. The significance of that date is that the draft signing deadline was two weeks from Monday. First round pick Donovan Tate, second round pick, Everett Williams, and fourth round pick, Keyvius Sampson remain unsigned. Tate will almost certainly sign. And Grady Fuson recently suggested that the Padres may only sign one of Williams or Sampson. However, with the Padres trade of Peavy and the remaining 2009 salary coming off the books, the Padres should have additional funds to sign all three players. It will be interesting to see how the next two weeks go.
