Padres Put 3 on BA PHS
Padres über-prospect Jaff Decker made a return trip to the weekly Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet at #7. “One of the most mature hitters for his age you’ll find, Decker looks like he’s saved his best for last. Decker hit .320/.434/.550 in 100 August at-bats… He’s also been the best hitter on the winningest team in the minors, leading Fort Wayne to a 90-46 record entering the season’s final weekend.”
Un-surprisingly, hot-hitting Chad Huffman ranked 10th on the list. “With a two-run shot on Wednesday, Huffman clubbed his 20th homer of the year—and he’s taken just 524 PAs to get there.” BA fails to mention that Huffman got hits in 9 straight at-bats.
Unfortunately, Mitch Canham made the “Not-So Hot List” portion of the list.

Commentary
Adan Velazquez? I don’t know either…
I’ve heard frequently that Sawyer Carroll isn’t a prospect… Now he doesn’t (hasn’t) hit as many HR as you’d like to see from a corner outfielder, but he is hitting .320/.407/.495 between Low-A and High-A with 33 doubles, 6 triples, 7 home runs, 58 walks vs. 82 strikeouts, and 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He was drafted last year as a collegiate senior, so he needs to move fast, but he is hitting…
Since the Padres acquired Italiano, he has tossed 12.1 innings allowing 8 hits and 5 walks while striking out 14 and he has an incredible 6.33 ground-ball outs per fly ball out. Those numbers are obviously impressive (except for the 5 walks) but small sample size warnings ring loudly.

Padres Prospects Well Represented in BA PHS
Padres Double-A third baseman, Logan Forsythe, checked in at number 9 on Baseball America’s weekly Prospect Hot Sheet with high praise, “The minor league leader in walks (71) and on-base percentage (.463), Forsythe quietly has made his case as the most productive hitter from the ‘08 draft.” But “[m]ore than just a patient hitter bent on drawing walks, Forsythe has batted .324 on the year, in making the jump to Double-A, with a modest .495 slugging percentage and strikeouts in just 20 percent of his at-bats.”
Additionally, in their honorable mention, “In The Team Photo” section, they reference another San Antonio Mission; Mitch Canham. Mitch “…has provided steady offense in July, going 17-for-39 (.436) with three homers, two doubles and eight RBIs in 12 games. The lefthanded hitter did much of that damage in the past week, and he boasts an impressive 33-to-41 walk-to-strikeout ratio over 71 games this season.”
Not to be satisfied with two Padres prospects, Edinson Rincon is lauded in the “Helium Watch” segment. “He’s only 18 years old, but Rincon already looks like one of the best hitters in the short-season Northwest League.” BA goes on to say, “Combine his plate discipline with his potential to also hit for average and power and you have a teenager hitting .377/.473/.636 with four home runs, 12 walks and 13 strikeouts, with multi-hit games in 11 of his 20 games.”

Commentary
Goodness… Galvin Galvez might need to be promoted to Eugene soon.
Mikey’s famous!
Cedric Hunter also homered tonight, but only went 1-4 so he didn’t make the list…
Castro gave up a bunch of hits late otherwise that line wouldn’t merit inclusion.
With Walter Silva struggling and Stauffer pitching on the same day, it would be easy to swap them…
