Pitcher of the Day

Erik Davis (Low-A): 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Happy Birthday Austin! Sunday was my oldest son’s 8th birthday…

Hitter(s) of the Day

Nathan Freiman (SS): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, BB

Vince Belnome (Low-A): 3-5, 3B, R, 3 RBI

Cedric Hunter (AA): 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI,

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Chris Fetter (Low-A): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR

Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Where do you rank Chris Fetter? He has pitched in short-season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne and has a combined 1.66 ERA. He throws in the low-90’s (legit but not “write home” velocity) and he’s taller and thus pitches at that downward plane that pitching experts love… On the other hand, he’s older (turns 24 this December) and will have to move through the system quickly. The system has gotten a lot deeper this year (with the addition of 2009 draftees, and development of 2008 draftees and 2008 international free agent acquisitions, and trade booty). Last year I rated Anthony Bass 23. I would argue that Fetter is comparable this year to Anthony Bass last year but because of increased depth, Fetter will not rank that high…

Cedric Hunter hit well last week (14 for 31 – .452).

Vincent Belnome (SS): 2-4, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 SO – 10th HR

Drew Cumberland (Low-A): 2-4, 3B, R, 2 RBI, BB

Eric Sogard (AA): 4-6, 2B, 2 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI – Have a day!

Luis Durango (AA): 3-4, R, 2 BB, SO, SB – 42nd SB

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Jonathan Berger (SS): 6.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR

Chris Fetter (SS): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Cory Luebke (AA): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

After some success in Short Season A-ball, the Padres needed some innings eaten up in Low-A, so they temporarily promoted Chris Fetter. Chris is back in Short-Season A-ball now. This is his combined stat line:

3-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 51.2 IP with 41 H and 0 HR allowed and a 13/64 BB/SO ratio

Might the Padres have found another Anthony Bass? Fetter is a lot taller but like Bass, throws in the low-90’s.

Matt Antonelli (AAA): 3-4, 2B, R,

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Commentary

Allan Dystra does not have good overall numbers (.204/.385/.339) but there are encouraging signs:

  1. He has a 41% XBH rate
  2. He has 87 walks (which is good but vs. 83 strikeouts, which is worrisome)
  3. Despite a terrible batting average, he has a more than respectable .385 OBP

I’m not saying he deserves top prospect status, but nor does he deserve to be dismissed.

How does a guy (Luis Durango) get on base 4 times and in a game where his team scores 14, he only scores 1 run (by the way, the team grounded into zero double-plays)?

Matt! Welcome back! We need to see more of you…

Cory Luebke (AA): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR

Commentary

Steve Garrison is a bit of a forgotten Padre starting pitching prospect but in 2008 he posted a 3.82 ERA in 129 innings in Double-A as a 21 year old. He will turn 23 this September. He is not an uber-prospect, but he is a prospect. I suspect that he will be back in AA in 2010.

Sawyer Carroll is shooting up through the system…

I have a hard time putting a late-round collegiate draftee on my personal “prospect” list, so far, Cameron Monger’s night will go here:

Cameron Monger (Rookie): 3-4, 3B, 2 R, BB, 2 SB – stole home!

Dexter Carter had a nice 2nd Padres-organization start.

Commentary

Dexter Carter made his organizational debut with less than stellar results (to put it mildly):

3.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Aaron Poreda also struggled in his Padres’ system debut:

4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR

…maybe Clayton Richards was the centerpiece of the Peavy trade… I kid – and for the record, I’m not worried about either Carter or Poreda – and I’m also quite impressed with Richards.

I’m still a big Cedric Hunter fan, but he is struggling mightily (.252/.285/.325). He needs a strong finish. Cedric has a ton of talent but it would be hard to justify bringing him back to AA next year – Chalk in High-A and Tekotte in Low-A each are very deserving of promotions all three need to play every day. Luis Durango, with whom Hunter is sharing time in CF, is ready for AAA. Cedric Hunter is in a tough spot as a prospect.

Cody Decker (Rookie): 2-2, 2B, 3B, R, RBI, BB

Edinson Rincon (SS): 3-5, R, RBI – just keeps hitting…

Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-3, R, BB

Luis Durango (AA): 3-5, R, SB

Mitch Canham (AA): 2-4, 2B, RBI

Pitcher of the Day

Craig Italiano (High-A): 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Adan Velazquez? I don’t know either…

I’ve heard frequently that Sawyer Carroll isn’t a prospect… Now he doesn’t (hasn’t) hit as many HR as you’d like to see from a corner outfielder, but he is hitting .320/.407/.495 between Low-A and High-A with 33 doubles, 6 triples, 7 home runs, 58 walks vs. 82 strikeouts, and 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He was drafted last year as a collegiate senior, so he needs to move fast, but he is hitting…

Since the Padres acquired Italiano, he has tossed 12.1 innings allowing 8 hits and 5 walks while striking out 14 and he has an incredible 6.33 ground-ball outs per fly ball out. Those numbers are obviously impressive (except for the 5 walks) but small sample size warnings ring loudly.

Commentary

Jaff Decker hit his 12th HR Friday evening. Decker is now hitting: .290/.441/.525. He is 2nd in OPS (you could even say he leads in OPS – James Darnell, now in the CAL League is the only player listed ahead of Jaff), 7th in HR, and 3rd in walks (behind teammate Allan Dykstra and Darnell).

Commentary

If you aren’t stoked about the future of the Padres, you aren’t paying attention. Geoff Young and I drove to Lake Elsinore Saturday and watched the Storm play. On the way home we discussed what players would be manning all 8 starting fielding positions, 5 starting pitchers, and a closer for the 2013 Padres (we allowed any player in the organization – as well un-signed draftees). You can go at least 2-deep at every position (except pitchers) and have what looks to be a solid club. Obviously they are not all going to pan out, but nor are they all going to flame out. I’ll post mine tomorrow… What’s your 2013 Padres lineup look like?

We haven’t talked about Superman (Jaff Decker’s nickname) in awhile… Our young super hero is hitting .293/.454/.518 with 23 XBH (13 doubles & 10 home runs) and a 53/46 BB/SO ratio.

Yikes! Jerry Sullivan got lit up Thursday night (2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 2 HR)

Hitter(s) of the Day

Lance Zawadzki (AA): 2-4, HR, 3 R, RBI, BB, SO, 2 SB

Pitcher of the Day

Cesar Carrillo (AA): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR

Commentary

It is impressive that Zawadzki and Forsythe (each having been promoted mid-season) batted 3-4.

I debated putting Carrillo’s performance up but he’s now allowed only 5 ER over his last 3 starts (21.0 IP 2.14 ERA). I don’t think Carrillo is ready for a big league call-up, but he certainly is pitching well lately.
