Hitter(s) of the Day

Nathan Freiman (SS): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, BB

Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Where do you rank Chris Fetter? He has pitched in short-season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne and has a combined 1.66 ERA. He throws in the low-90’s (legit but not “write home” velocity) and he’s taller and thus pitches at that downward plane that pitching experts love… On the other hand, he’s older (turns 24 this December) and will have to move through the system quickly. The system has gotten a lot deeper this year (with the addition of 2009 draftees, and development of 2008 draftees and 2008 international free agent acquisitions, and trade booty). Last year I rated Anthony Bass 23. I would argue that Fetter is comparable this year to Anthony Bass last year but because of increased depth, Fetter will not rank that high…

Craig Italiano (High-A): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Jerry Sullivan has been up and down since beginning his pro career… On the good side of the ledger: 53 strikeouts in 46.2 innings and .220 BAA… On the bad side: 5 HR and 23 walks. You cannot walk hitters and give up a lot of home runs and expect to succeed.

How about the combined night Bass and Italiano had?

Two gems to start Reyes’ professional career…

Simon Castro had two disaster starts in August (4 ER in 3 IP on 8/8 and 6 ER in 5 IP on 8/13) and even so, in his last 10 starts he has a 3.20 ERA. Is Castro the Padres best non-Latos pitching prospect?

Cory Luebke (AA): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO, 1 HR

Commentary

Galvez has been trending in the wrong direction (1.148 OPS in June, .927 in July, and .792 before Tuesday’s contest in August and batting .162 over last 10 games). It’s nice to see him have a good night at the plate.

This is a recap/expansion of a conversation I had with the Godfather of Padres bloggers, Geoff Young: Edinson Rincon just turned 19 years on August 11. I am a September baby. When I started elementary school in North Dakota you had to turn 6 by September 1 to be in the first grade. I missed that by a few weeks. So by the time I was a high school senior, I was 18 in September of my senior year of high school. So if Edinson was like me (and chances are, as an August baby, he would be a year ahead of someone like me but the point still works, so bear with me) he would be in his first summer out of high school – much like Donovan Tate and/or Everett Williams. Now look at the success Rincon is having and the fact that he has 330+/- professional at-bats and a career .293/.409/.430 line (even more at-bats – but a worse line if you consider his DSL AB’s). Tate will rank ahead of Rincon on virtually every prospect list published (including mine) but should he? With the success and experience Rincon has we are probably still selling him short.

On August 17, many Padre fans raved about the fact that we signed all three of top (at that point) still unsigned draftees: Tate, Williams, and Sampson. There was very little fanfare however, about the signing of Jorge Reyes. Jorge doesn’t deserve the same adulation that the three high schoolers do, but he’s not an insignificant signing either. If we rate the draftees according the money they signed for, the Padres got one first-round pick: Tate, one first-supplemental: Williams, one second: Sampson, one third: Sullivan, two fourths: Reyes amd Needy, and one fifth: Hagerty. Reyes didn’t have the K-rates (in college) that I like, but he is a legitimate prospect.

Cory Luebke was rated by at least one scout as one of the better prospects in the California-Carolina High-A All Star Game. If you’re not paying attention, shame on you.
