Hitter(s) of the Day
Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SO
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-5, HR, 2 R, RBI, SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR

Evan Scribner (AA): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
I am certain we will see Evan Scribner in big league uniform at some point. That said, Pelzer and Inman have higher upsides. It is good to see productivity in playoff situations from all three hurlers.

Eric Sogard’s numbers took a hit this season (in an extreme pitchers’ park) but he still hit .293/.370/.400 with more walks than strikeouts (road: .320/.406/.436, home: .267/.335/.366).

Dykstra came on strong to end the season. It will be interesting to see if he reverts to his ugly 75% of season numbers or if he builds on his fantastic final month.

Padres Put 3 on BA PHS
Padres über-prospect Jaff Decker made a return trip to the weekly Baseball America Prospect Hot Sheet at #7. “One of the most mature hitters for his age you’ll find, Decker looks like he’s saved his best for last. Decker hit .320/.434/.550 in 100 August at-bats… He’s also been the best hitter on the winningest team in the minors, leading Fort Wayne to a 90-46 record entering the season’s final weekend.”
Un-surprisingly, hot-hitting Chad Huffman ranked 10th on the list. “With a two-run shot on Wednesday, Huffman clubbed his 20th homer of the year—and he’s taken just 524 PAs to get there.” BA fails to mention that Huffman got hits in 9 straight at-bats.
Unfortunately, Mitch Canham made the “Not-So Hot List” portion of the list.

Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-4, R, RBI, BB
Brad Chalk (High-A): 2-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SO
James Darnell (High-A): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, BB
Sawyer Carroll (AA): 2-4, 3B

Pitcher of the Day
Keyvius Sampson (SS): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Chad Huffman went 3-4 on Tuesday (hits in last 2 at-bats), 3-3 on Wednesday, and 4-4 on Thursday with 4 doubles and a home run (combined). Yesterday I said Huffman had 49 XBH, I was wrong, he had 50, tonight’s double was #51. Huffman is now hitting .273/.366/.478.
Keyvius Sampson’s professional debut season consists of 6 innings so far. Thus we cannot conclude anything. However, the fact that he has only allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 is definitely encouraging. Fourth round pick? I’m excited.

Pitcher(s) of the Day
Chris Fetter (Low-A): 4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR – back in Ft. Wayne
Will Inman (AA): 7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Nathan Freiman is coming along nicely, after a slow start (.633 OPS in June & .775 OPS in July) Nate has an .810+ OPS in his professional debut. What is really interesting however is that the big right-hander has struggled against left-handed pitching (.207/.281/.293).
Chris Fetter now has a combined 1.80 ERA over 60 innings between Eugene and Fort Wayne.
Allan Dykstra hit .319/.432/.505 in August.

Craig Italiano (High-A): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Jerry Sullivan has been up and down since beginning his pro career… On the good side of the ledger: 53 strikeouts in 46.2 innings and .220 BAA… On the bad side: 5 HR and 23 walks. You cannot walk hitters and give up a lot of home runs and expect to succeed.
How about the combined night Bass and Italiano had?

Evan Scribner (AA): 2.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Two gems to start Reyes’ professional career…
Simon Castro had two disaster starts in August (4 ER in 3 IP on 8/8 and 6 ER in 5 IP on 8/13) and even so, in his last 10 starts he has a 3.20 ERA. Is Castro the Padres best non-Latos pitching prospect?

Five Questions with LaMond Pope
LaMond Pope covers the Fort Wayne TinCaps for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette. He has seen many players, prospects, and suspects come through the Midwest League (check out his TinCaps blog for some of his great work). He was gracious enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer five questions for PRD.
PadresRunDown: How long have you been writing about sports/baseball and how long have you been covering the Fort Wayne TinCaps/Wizards?
LaMond Pope: I graduated from Indiana University in 2000 and started at a small paper in Ithaca, N.Y. I covered everything from basketball to lacrosse for Cornell University. I moved to Fort Wayne in the fall of 2005 and became the baseball writer late in the 2006 season after the previous reporter, Sarah Trotto, took a job in Arizona.
But I always say that my sports writing started in grade school. We’d play some type of sport (baseball, football, basketball) during recess and then I would come back to class and write a report for my grandpa. This job was really all I’ve ever wanted to do.
PRD: Who has been the most impressive hitter & pitcher you’ve ever seen and what stood out about them (home team only)? Who has been your favorite player(s) to cover/interview?
LM: Will Venable was on the 2006 season. He had a great year in Fort Wayne, setting the team record for RBI. He was just very consistent at the plate. Obviously, I have to mention Mat Latos. He overpowered hitters here this season. Jaff Decker has shown great poise for someone his age.
Since covering the team, all the players have been respectful. This year’s group has been fun to cover. There are a lot of characters on the team.
PRD: A lot of fans think sports writing is easy (and certainly it’s not rocket science) but what would you say to those people who think anyone can do your job?
LM: I think the biggest challenge is the deadline. There was a recent game where I had an 11:15 deadline. The game ended on a wild pitch in the 12th inning at 11:13. That was a close call. It’s also one of my favorite parts of the job. I’m trying to come up with creative ways to tell the story as the game unfolds.
People ask, “Isn’t it the same every day?” Part of the challenge, which I enjoy as well, is advancing the story. Not only telling what happened, but how it plays into the larger picture.
PRD: Do you have an athletic background yourself, or a just a love for sports?
LM: I played baseball for 10 years, including all four years at Waukegan High School (we won a division title my first year on varsity). I was a second baseman who could field, but couldn’t hit or throw.
PRD: What player (any sport) would you most like to interview (past or present) and why?
LM: Waukegan is located about 30 minutes north of Chicago, so I grew up a Cubs, Bears and Bulls fan. Walter Payton was my favorite football player and of course Michael Jordan was my favorite basketball player. One of the first teams I remember following was the 1984 Cubs. Getting the chance to interview Ryne Sandberg while he managed in Peoria was a highlight.
***
I can completely respect being Peyton and Jordan fan. And uhhh, sorry about 1984 there, LaMond. Just kidding, and thanks again for doing this.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Everett Williams (Rookie): 3-5, 3B, R, 2 RBI, SB
Jonathan Galvez (Rookie): 2-5, HR, R, 2 RBI, SB
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-5, HR, R, 2 RBI, SO – .300/.444/.517
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, R, BB, SB
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Erik Davis (Low-A): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 SO, 0 HR
Aaron Breit (High-A): 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Josh Banks (AAA): 8.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
It’s nice to see Everett Williams with some early success.
Jaff Decker got a late start on the season and missed a few games and as only managed to get 323 at-bats. The team leader in at-bats is Blake Tekotte with 497. Even with a low AB total, Decker has managed 22 doubles and 16 home runs. If we extrapolate those numbers out to 500 AB Decker would have 34 doubles and nearly 25 home runs.
Erik Davis is someone I was quite excited about. He had 2.70 ERA in Eugene last year (in only 26.2 innings) and has 3.72 ERA so far in Fort Wayne. His overall numbers are not dominant (8.3 H/9) but he is more than respectable (7.68 K/9). I don’t know enough of his repertoire to know if an eventual move to the bullpen is his ticket to the big leagues, but I do know he is a nice pitcher to have in the organization and someone I’ll continue to watch.
I still think Josh Banks can have a career as a big league starter.

Lara is still impressing… He reminds me of Ernesto Freiri… But I’m not sure that’s fair – to either of them.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Drew Cumberland (Low-A): 3-5, 2B, 3B, 2 R, RBI
Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 2-3, RBI, BB
Chad Huffman (AAA): 3-5, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI,

Anthony Bass (High-A): 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Steve Garrison (High-A): 4.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Wade LeBlanc (AAA): 7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Allan Dykstra is batting .333 over last 10 games and has 8 hits in 15 at-bats with 5 walks in last 5 games.
The Padres have kept Anthony Bass on a short leash in High-A to limit his innings. His previous CAL League innings high was 4.0 and until Saturday, he never had more than 3 strikeouts in a game and worst of all he had allowed more walks than strikeouts. Saturday was a breakthrough outing. He limited his walks, he got a few punchouts, and he remained difficult to hit. Bass doesn’t deserve consideration with the top non-Latos pitching prospects (Poreda, Castro, and Portillo), but he is in the conversation among the next group and may even top that next list.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Edinson Rincon (SS): 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, SO

Pitcher(s) of the Day
Michael Watt (Low-A): 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Watt is an enigma. He constantly has outings that are just blah… But then every once in awhile, he’ll have these, “Wow” performances. And overall his numbers are solid (Low-A statistics):
3.65 ERA in 111.0 IP with 102 H and 5 HR allowed and a 38/82 BB/SO
…Don’t forget, Michael is still just 20 years old.

Vincent Belnome (SS): 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB
Edinson Rincon (SS): 3-5, 2B, 2 R, SO
Nate Freiman (SS): 3-5, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI, SO
Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 1-2, 2B, R, RBI, 2 BB – 8/17 game concluded 8/18
Jaff Dekcer (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, RBI – 8/18 game
Matt Clark (High-A): 4-4, HR, R, 2 RBI
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Simon Castro (Low-A): 7.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO, 0 HR – 7 inning no-no
Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 6.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Simon Castro is too often overlooked. I saw both Kevin Goldstein and John Sickels refer to him as a “sleeper prospect” this year. Now if you said that last year, when he toiling in the relative obscurity of the Northwest League, I get it. But he is a 6’5” power righty that has a FB that touches 95 and has led the Midwest League in strikeouts virtually all season (142 in 123.1 innings).
Aug/099
Padres MiLB, August 11, Players of the Day
Hitter(s) of the Day
Cameron Monger (Rookie): 4-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, CS – Okay, I give in. Here he is…
Jonathan Galvez (Rookie): 2-5, 2B, R, SO
Jason Hagerty (SS): 3-4, 2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 3-5, 2 R, BB, CS – hitting .312/.410/.480 post All Star
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-4, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-4, R, RBI, BB, SO
Matt Clark (High-A): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, 2 SO
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Alexis Lara (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR
Chris Fetter (SS): 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Matt Clark is an interesting hitter to look at deeper than his surface statistics (combined: .272/.353/.489). He’s hitting better in the hitter-friendly California League (.281/.354/.497) than he did in MidWest League (..266/.352/.484); which is not surprising. Another thing that isn’t too surprising when you think about it – the question is, “Did you think about it?” I know I didn’t… The Cal League is known for being a hitters’ league, but most people are unaware that The Diamond in Lake Elsinore is a pitchers’ park… To whit, Matt Clark is hitting .330/.396/.637 in the rest of the hitter-friendly Cal League while hitting .224/.307/.329 at home. Those dramatic splits do not speak well to Clark’s prospect status. We’ll reserve judgment until we have more than 167 total at-bats in High-A.
Alexis Lara is a relatively unknown Padres relief pitching prospect. He throws a 93-95+ fastball and according to a Randy Smith tweet (@ResPadres) has only allowed 1 run in past two months. Overall he has 3.49 ERA in 56.2 innings allowing 37 H and 4 HR with a 23/69 BB/SO ratio.
Chris Fetter wasn’t drafted with much fan-fare (except by loyal PRD reader, Mr. Dick Fetter and their family – just kidding!) but he has pitched quite well and deserves notice.
Fetter’s 2009 statistics (combined stats between Fort Wayne and Eugene):
3-1 with 2.49 ERA in 43.1 IP allowing 36 H and 0 HR with a 11/50 BB/SO ratio
