Craig Italiano (High-A): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Jerry Sullivan has been up and down since beginning his pro career… On the good side of the ledger: 53 strikeouts in 46.2 innings and .220 BAA… On the bad side: 5 HR and 23 walks. You cannot walk hitters and give up a lot of home runs and expect to succeed.

How about the combined night Bass and Italiano had?

Two gems to start Reyes’ professional career…

Simon Castro had two disaster starts in August (4 ER in 3 IP on 8/8 and 6 ER in 5 IP on 8/13) and even so, in his last 10 starts he has a 3.20 ERA. Is Castro the Padres best non-Latos pitching prospect?

Hitter(s) of the Day

Adan Velazquez (DSL): 5-6, 2 2B, HR, 4 R, 6 RBI – 19 yr. old, .288/.367/.518

Cody Decker (Rookie): 2-2, 2B, 3B, R, RBI, BB

Edinson Rincon (SS): 3-5, R, RBI – just keeps hitting…

Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-3, R, BB

Sawyer Carroll (High-A): 2-3, 2B, HR, R, 4 RBI, 2 BB, SO

Luis Durango (AA): 3-5, R, SB

Mitch Canham (AA): 2-4, 2B, RBI

Pitcher of the Day

Craig Italiano (High-A): 4.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Adan Velazquez? I don’t know either…

I’ve heard frequently that Sawyer Carroll isn’t a prospect… Now he doesn’t (hasn’t) hit as many HR as you’d like to see from a corner outfielder, but he is hitting .320/.407/.495 between Low-A and High-A with 33 doubles, 6 triples, 7 home runs, 58 walks vs. 82 strikeouts, and 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He was drafted last year as a collegiate senior, so he needs to move fast, but he is hitting…

Since the Padres acquired Italiano, he has tossed 12.1 innings allowing 8 hits and 5 walks while striking out 14 and he has an incredible 6.33 ground-ball outs per fly ball out. Those numbers are obviously impressive (except for the 5 walks) but small sample size warnings ring loudly.

Commentary

Jaff Decker hit his 12th HR Friday evening. Decker is now hitting: .290/.441/.525. He is 2nd in OPS (you could even say he leads in OPS – James Darnell, now in the CAL League is the only player listed ahead of Jaff), 7th in HR, and 3rd in walks (behind teammate Allan Dykstra and Darnell).

Commentary

If you aren’t stoked about the future of the Padres, you aren’t paying attention. Geoff Young and I drove to Lake Elsinore Saturday and watched the Storm play. On the way home we discussed what players would be manning all 8 starting fielding positions, 5 starting pitchers, and a closer for the 2013 Padres (we allowed any player in the organization – as well un-signed draftees). You can go at least 2-deep at every position (except pitchers) and have what looks to be a solid club. Obviously they are not all going to pan out, but nor are they all going to flame out. I’ll post mine tomorrow… What’s your 2013 Padres lineup look like?

Pitcher of the Day

Chris Wilkes (SS): 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR

Drew Cumberland has had problems staying healthy. Leaving a game from an injury can’t be good for the shortstop prospect. He sat out Sunday’s contest as well.

Cory Luebke (AA): 3.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR – left game with injury

Commentary

Allowing more walks than strikeouts is an auto-exclusion for Pitcher of the Day but Will Inman’s outing deserves mention… His performance goes here:

5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR (Corrected)

Tim Stauffer (AAA): 8.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

Goodness… Galvin Galvez might need to be promoted to Eugene soon.

Mikey’s famous!

Cedric Hunter also homered tonight, but only went 1-4 so he didn’t make the list…

Castro gave up a bunch of hits late otherwise that line wouldn’t merit inclusion.

With Walter Silva struggling and Stauffer pitching on the same day, it would be easy to swap them…

Hairston Traded for Who?

On Sunday, the Padres traded Scott Hairston to the Oakland A’s for Ryan Webb, Craig Italiano, and a player to be named later.

Both Webb and Italiano have been too hittable (more hits than innings pitched) but have struck out a decent number of hitters (Italiano has Career Minor League K/9 of 10.2, Webb has a less impressive 6.9 K/9). Because of Hairston’s hitting prowess as a center-fielder (.307/.364/.547 so far in 2009), I have to believe the PTBNL is the centerpiece of the deal. If that is the case, there is a good chance that the reason the player is an unofficial part of the deal is because teams cannot trade a draft pick until that player has been with the organization for a full year.

Jemile Weeks, the A’s top draft pick from 2008 signed on July 9. He could be the centerpiece of this deal (edit: we now know, thanks to MadFriars.com, the Padres are picking between two pitchers). Weeks is an athletic 2B in his first full season of professional baseball. Through his 46 game career, Weeks has hit .330/.426/.535. He is currently playing in High-A Stockton (this is pure speculation on my part; I do not have any inside information on this trade).

New info:

MadFriars.com reports, “Earlier in the weekend, Oakland dealt former first-round pick Danny Putnam to San Diego.”

Also (from same article): “The Padres will pick from two pitchers sometime this month to determine who the PTBNL is. General manager Kevin Towers said one pitcher has major league service time.” So my Jemile Weeks idea obviously will not be accurate.
