Hitter(s) of the Day
Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SO
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-5, HR, 2 R, RBI, SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Pitcher(s) of the Day

Evan Scribner (AA): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
I am certain we will see Evan Scribner in big league uniform at some point. That said, Pelzer and Inman have higher upsides. It is good to see productivity in playoff situations from all three hurlers.

Hitter of the Day
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R
Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

Dykstra came on strong to end the season. It will be interesting to see if he reverts to his ugly 75% of season numbers or if he builds on his fantastic final month.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-4, R, BB
Cedric Hunter (AA): 2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB – hat tip: Bob
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Simon Castro (Low-A): 6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Brad Brach (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Ernesto Frieri (AA): 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Fort Wayne won 3-1 and San Antonio and Lake Elsinore each lost by one 1-0 in 11 innings for San Antonio, and 6-5 for Lake Elsinore.
Simon Castro and Brad Brach and two other pitchers combined for a 2-hitter.
Frieri get zero love as a prospect. He has only allowed 125 hits in 147 innings (regular season plus Wednesday’s playoff game) and has a 7.6 K/9. On the down-side, he has a 3.97 BB/9. I’m not sure he’s a future starter, but I like him a lot as a reliever.

Happy Birthday Austin! Sunday was my oldest son’s 8th birthday…
Hitter(s) of the Day
Nathan Freiman (SS): 3-4, HR, R, 4 RBI, BB
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 3-5, 3B, R, 3 RBI
Cedric Hunter (AA): 3-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, 2 RBI,
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Chris Fetter (Low-A): 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Where do you rank Chris Fetter? He has pitched in short-season Eugene and Low-A Fort Wayne and has a combined 1.66 ERA. He throws in the low-90’s (legit but not “write home” velocity) and he’s taller and thus pitches at that downward plane that pitching experts love… On the other hand, he’s older (turns 24 this December) and will have to move through the system quickly. The system has gotten a lot deeper this year (with the addition of 2009 draftees, and development of 2008 draftees and 2008 international free agent acquisitions, and trade booty). Last year I rated Anthony Bass 23. I would argue that Fetter is comparable this year to Anthony Bass last year but because of increased depth, Fetter will not rank that high…

Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
So one night after I talk about Huffman, he brings his OPS up an additional 16 points. Doing that in the last week of the season is impressive.
About this time last year, we were suggesting that the “throw in” in the Scott Linebrink trade, Steve Garrison, was the top prospect of the bunch (traded with Will Inman and Joe Thatcher). Then with just a few games left in the season, we learned that he had a shoulder injury. Wednesday night he returned all the way to Double-A. Garrison has been pitching (20.1 innings in the AZL and 7.2 innings in the CAL) and has been better than I would have expected (combined Rookie, High-A, and AA stats):
1-0 with 4.36 ERA in 33.0 IP allowed 31 H and 1 HR and an 8/32 BB/SO ratio

Cory Luebke (AA): 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR
Commentary
Steve Garrison is a bit of a forgotten Padre starting pitching prospect but in 2008 he posted a 3.82 ERA in 129 innings in Double-A as a 21 year old. He will turn 23 this September. He is not an uber-prospect, but he is a prospect. I suspect that he will be back in AA in 2010.
Sawyer Carroll is shooting up through the system…

I have a hard time putting a late-round collegiate draftee on my personal “prospect” list, so far, Cameron Monger’s night will go here:
Cameron Monger (Rookie): 3-4, 3B, 2 R, BB, 2 SB – stole home!
Dexter Carter had a nice 2nd Padres-organization start.

Commentary
Dexter Carter made his organizational debut with less than stellar results (to put it mildly):
3.1 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Aaron Poreda also struggled in his Padres’ system debut:
4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 1 HR
…maybe Clayton Richards was the centerpiece of the Peavy trade… I kid – and for the record, I’m not worried about either Carter or Poreda – and I’m also quite impressed with Richards.
I’m still a big Cedric Hunter fan, but he is struggling mightily (.252/.285/.325). He needs a strong finish. Cedric has a ton of talent but it would be hard to justify bringing him back to AA next year – Chalk in High-A and Tekotte in Low-A each are very deserving of promotions all three need to play every day. Luis Durango, with whom Hunter is sharing time in CF, is ready for AAA. Cedric Hunter is in a tough spot as a prospect.

Commentary
Mikey’s famous!
Simon Castro had a evening that was nearly Pitcher of the Day worthy:
5.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
…but I cannot put a 5.40 ERA (the 1-game ERA) up there…

I don’t know if Osuna is legit prospect, but I’m following him – I know next to nothing about him, but I just have this feeling…

Mat Latos looked good. He wasn’t effiecient, but what 21 year old is in his Major League debut? The Padres are obviously working to limit his innings (less than 80 pitches in 4 innings).

Allowing more walks than strikeouts is an auto-exclusion for Pitcher of the Day but Will Inman’s outing deserves mention… His performance goes here:

Five Questions with Cedric Hunter
Welcome to our new feature. John Conniff and I were discussing the website and he suggested this format – so if you like it, thank him, if you don’t – well I probably should have done a better job…
This is designed to be a weekly feature for PRD. For our first installment, I was able to get a hold of Cedric Hunter and Hunter graciously agreed to answer five questions…
Cedric is playing in AA San Antonio as a 21 year old. Cedric started the season slowly but has rebounded and is currently hitting .268/.304/.325. Those aren’t good numbers, but two years ago in the MWL he started slowly and slowly built his numbers back up and finished the season with respectable numbers. I anticipate another slow build-up and Cedric finishing the season again with good numbers. He’s on the Padres’ short list for the CF of the future.
Cedric, thanks for taking the time to answer my questions…
PadresRunDown: Home runs haven’t been a big part of your game, with the crackdown on Performance Enhancing Drugs, do you think your style of play will become more en vogue again?
Cedric Hunter: Yea I def think so. All organizations have hitters who hit for average or for runs scored it’s a big part of the line up. The OBP most important part of getting runs.
PRD: You batted .371 in the AZL, .282 in the MWL, and .318 in the CAL, do think you can hit for a high average no matter what level?
CH: I think I can hit for an high avg anywhere no matter what levels is just a word to me.
PRD: You’re from GA but since joining the Padres organization you’ve played in Arizona, Indiana, California, and now Texas. Do you miss the South and what do you like/not like about the various parts of the country?
CH: Yeah I kind of do but its kind of cool to go to place that you never been to play ball.
Nothing really all the places are pretty hot so it’s cool.
PRD: As a third round pick in 2006 you surely got a decent signing bonus, did you treat yourself with a nice car or anything?
CH: Yea I did i mean nothing to fancy I got an 2003 M3 love it to death.
PRD: Who is the funniest teammate you’ve had in the Padres organization, and why?
CH: I would say Wynn Pelzer just a natural funny dude man everytime you’re around him he makes u laugh in some kind of way.
PRD: Thanks so much Cedric. And by the way, I love M3’s – nice ride!

Hairston Trade Rebuttal
Dave Cameron, the highly respected co-founder of USSMariner.com, wrote a piece where he wonders (probably in jest) if the Padres’ trade of Hairston is an attempt to tank so they can be in the mix to draft über-prospect, Bryce Harper…
On a serious note, Cameron says,
Mr. Towers, but you play in the most pitcher friendly ballpark in baseball. You’ve picked up Chad Gaudin and Kevin Correia off the scrap heap and watched them turn into pretty useful arms in the expanse of Petco Park, after doing the same thing with Cha Seung Baek last year. Your ballpark is a veritable pitching factory, allowing you to take arms with some flaws and make them look all shiny and new.
Mr. Cameron, Correia is a nice arm and has pitched well for us, but at best he’s a forth or fifth starter on a championship caliber club, Gaudin – same thing. We’ve heard Peavy is on the block and Young has struggled this year (likely to injury but we don’t know with certainty what level Young will pitch at until he returns)… So to infer that the pitching is a team strength is not accurate.
Cameron goes to point out – accurately – that the Padres, “don’t have a major league offense.” He’s right, but Cameron completely ignores Towers’ assertion that, “…this is a move for us beyond this year.”
The Padres aren’t going to win the division this year and they likely will not contend for a division title until 2011 at the earliest (the last year Padres would have held Hairston’s rights). The Padres have several centerfielders in the system who are legitimate Major League prospects (Cedric Hunter, Luis Durango, Brad Chalk, and Blake Tekotte) not to mention Tony Gwynn Jr. or the recently drafted Donovan Tate and Everett Williams. Hairston was nice and his departure will cost this year’s club a win or two but this was not a bad trade and may benefit the Padres in the long term.
I’m not going to say that the Padres will get the better of this deal – we won’t know that for another 2 years-plus. However, given the current situation, I can completely understand the reasoning behind it.
