Hitter(s) of the Day
Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI, BB
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-4, R, RBI, BB
Brad Chalk (High-A): 2-5, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI, SO
James Darnell (High-A): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, BB
Sawyer Carroll (AA): 2-4, 3B
Chad Huffman (AAA): 4-4, 2 2B, R, RBI, 2 BB
Pitcher of the Day
Keyvius Sampson (SS): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Chad Huffman went 3-4 on Tuesday (hits in last 2 at-bats), 3-3 on Wednesday, and 4-4 on Thursday with 4 doubles and a home run (combined). Yesterday I said Huffman had 49 XBH, I was wrong, he had 50, tonight’s double was #51. Huffman is now hitting .273/.366/.478.
Keyvius Sampson’s professional debut season consists of 6 innings so far. Thus we cannot conclude anything. However, the fact that he has only allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 is definitely encouraging. Fourth round pick? I’m excited.

Brandon Gomes (AA): 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
So one night after I talk about Huffman, he brings his OPS up an additional 16 points. Doing that in the last week of the season is impressive.
About this time last year, we were suggesting that the “throw in” in the Scott Linebrink trade, Steve Garrison, was the top prospect of the bunch (traded with Will Inman and Joe Thatcher). Then with just a few games left in the season, we learned that he had a shoulder injury. Wednesday night he returned all the way to Double-A. Garrison has been pitching (20.1 innings in the AZL and 7.2 innings in the CAL) and has been better than I would have expected (combined Rookie, High-A, and AA stats):
1-0 with 4.36 ERA in 33.0 IP allowed 31 H and 1 HR and an 8/32 BB/SO ratio

Padres MiLB, July 31-August 2, Players of the Day; Weekend Edition
This just in – or maybe you already heard – the Padres traded away former Cy Young winner, Jake Peavy. I, for one, am quite happy with the haul they got. Normally, when you’re in salary-shedding mode, if you do not kick in cash to get rid of a player, you get less in return. In the Padres’ Peavy-trade, they contributed zero cash and got 4 pitchers who each throw well into the 90’s:
Aaron Poreda – could be a #2-3 starter, throws an easy 92-4 FB and regularly touches 95-6 from the left side (has touched 98-100 in past) – doesn’t give up hits, but doesn’t strike out as many as “stuff” suggests he should – should at least develop into high-leverage reliever (future closer?)
Clayton Richards – throws low-mid 90’s 2-seam FB, curve, and iffy/developing change – solid upside is a #3 starter but could easily slot in nicely as 4-5 starter
Dexter Carter – A touch old for his level (22 in Low-A) but thoroughly dominating his level – Carter features a high 80’s-low 90’s FB and leads the SAL in strikeouts
Adam Russell – Features a mid-90’s+ fastball but doesn’t control it well (career MiLB 3.8 BB/9) if he can harness the heat a little better he will be an interesting arm to add to the bullpen mix
With the quantity of quality arms the White Sox had to give up to get Jake Peavy, they could end up on the wrong side of the talent ledger on this trade. Jake is an immense talent, but I am quite excited about the bounty his trade wrought.

If you aren’t stoked about the future of the Padres, you aren’t paying attention. Geoff Young and I drove to Lake Elsinore Saturday and watched the Storm play. On the way home we discussed what players would be manning all 8 starting fielding positions, 5 starting pitchers, and a closer for the 2013 Padres (we allowed any player in the organization – as well un-signed draftees). You can go at least 2-deep at every position (except pitchers) and have what looks to be a solid club. Obviously they are not all going to pan out, but nor are they all going to flame out. I’ll post mine tomorrow… What’s your 2013 Padres lineup look like?

Cody Decker is old enough (22) that he probably should should not be on this list. However, he keeps hitting (now .311/.363/.635 with 6 doubles & 6 home runs)… Let’s not overhype him, but we should probably keep watching…

Hairston Trade Rebuttal
Dave Cameron, the highly respected co-founder of USSMariner.com, wrote a piece where he wonders (probably in jest) if the Padres’ trade of Hairston is an attempt to tank so they can be in the mix to draft über-prospect, Bryce Harper…
On a serious note, Cameron says,
Mr. Towers, but you play in the most pitcher friendly ballpark in baseball. You’ve picked up Chad Gaudin and Kevin Correia off the scrap heap and watched them turn into pretty useful arms in the expanse of Petco Park, after doing the same thing with Cha Seung Baek last year. Your ballpark is a veritable pitching factory, allowing you to take arms with some flaws and make them look all shiny and new.
Mr. Cameron, Correia is a nice arm and has pitched well for us, but at best he’s a forth or fifth starter on a championship caliber club, Gaudin – same thing. We’ve heard Peavy is on the block and Young has struggled this year (likely to injury but we don’t know with certainty what level Young will pitch at until he returns)… So to infer that the pitching is a team strength is not accurate.
Cameron goes to point out – accurately – that the Padres, “don’t have a major league offense.” He’s right, but Cameron completely ignores Towers’ assertion that, “…this is a move for us beyond this year.”
The Padres aren’t going to win the division this year and they likely will not contend for a division title until 2011 at the earliest (the last year Padres would have held Hairston’s rights). The Padres have several centerfielders in the system who are legitimate Major League prospects (Cedric Hunter, Luis Durango, Brad Chalk, and Blake Tekotte) not to mention Tony Gwynn Jr. or the recently drafted Donovan Tate and Everett Williams. Hairston was nice and his departure will cost this year’s club a win or two but this was not a bad trade and may benefit the Padres in the long term.
I’m not going to say that the Padres will get the better of this deal – we won’t know that for another 2 years-plus. However, given the current situation, I can completely understand the reasoning behind it.
