Playoffs!
People, sorry I haven’t posted in a few days. I have been real busy with work and parenting (wife was out of town).

Hitter(s) of the Day
Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SO
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-5, HR, 2 R, RBI, SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
Will Inman (AA): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR
Evan Scribner (AA): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
I am certain we will see Evan Scribner in big league uniform at some point. That said, Pelzer and Inman have higher upsides. It is good to see productivity in playoff situations from all three hurlers.

Eric Sogard’s numbers took a hit this season (in an extreme pitchers’ park) but he still hit .293/.370/.400 with more walks than strikeouts (road: .320/.406/.436, home: .267/.335/.366).

Hitter of the Day
Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R
Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Stiven Osuna (Low-A): 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR

Dykstra came on strong to end the season. It will be interesting to see if he reverts to his ugly 75% of season numbers or if he builds on his fantastic final month.

Playoffs!
Hitter(s) of the Day
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-4, R, BB
Cedric Hunter (AA): 2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB – hat tip: Bob
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Simon Castro (Low-A): 6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Brad Brach (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Ernesto Frieri (AA): 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Fort Wayne won 3-1 and San Antonio and Lake Elsinore each lost by one 1-0 in 11 innings for San Antonio, and 6-5 for Lake Elsinore.
Simon Castro and Brad Brach and two other pitchers combined for a 2-hitter.
Frieri get zero love as a prospect. He has only allowed 125 hits in 147 innings (regular season plus Wednesday’s playoff game) and has a 7.6 K/9. On the down-side, he has a 3.97 BB/9. I’m not sure he’s a future starter, but I like him a lot as a reliever.
Aug/090
Padres MiLB, August 12, Players of the Day
Hitter of the Day
Cody Decker (Rookie): 2-4, 3B
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Will Startup (Rookie): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR – “Hey, remember me?”
Brad Brach (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
You can’t give up a walk every 1.5 IP and make the “Pitcher of the Day” list but Stiven Osuna did have a noteworthy outing for the Fort Wayne TinCaps:
6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Not a lot of game action to talk about. However, the Padres are presumably close to a deal with 1st round pick, Donovan Tate. As has been reported numerous places, Tate left UNC to go home to “consider an offer” from the Padres.
The Padres are also reportedly close to a deal with 4th round pick, Keyvius Sampson, according to a personal source.
No word on any progress with 2nd round pick, Everett Williams.

Hitter(s) of the Day
Adan Velazquez (DSL): 2-3, 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB
Drew Cumberland (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, R, 2 RBI, SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 3-4, R, RBI
James Darnell (High-A): 2-5,
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Chris Fetter (SS): 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO, 0 HR
Eric Erik Davis (Low-A): 6.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 9 SO, 0 HR
Brad Brach (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Decker and Darnell were both rated highly be Baseball America’s Jim Callis in the previous post. You have to like it when your top prospects perform like top prospects should.
Fetter is one of the basketball players err, tall pitchers the Padres drafted this past June. He made three starts in Fort Wayne (and posted a respectable 3.52 ERA there) but is now back in Eugene. I do not believe his jumping back and forth between levels is performance-related but rather the Padres needing starters/arms at each level.

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Evan Scribner (AA): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR – 18 saves
Commentary
Brad Brach gave three hits and two runs (earned) Tuesday night – the sky is falling! Run everybody!
Paul R. and I were at Lake Elsinore last night, Schmidt looked much less efficient than his 2-walk night suggests. However, he also showed off his big curve and made Inland Empire hitters look silly taking called strike three’s. You all know I’m a believer…

Castro has a 2.68 ERA over his last 10 games with only 40 hits allowed in 50.1 innings during those 10. He also has struck out 65 hitters while walking only 9… Pitcher of the Month? I know, he wants to join the TinCaps reunion down in Lake Elsinore (Schmidt, Bass, Darnell, Carroll, Clark).
(Late night combined with early start at work – I’ll add links later and post the Five Questions later as well.)

Jaff Decker hit his 12th HR Friday evening. Decker is now hitting: .290/.441/.525. He is 2nd in OPS (you could even say he leads in OPS – James Darnell, now in the CAL League is the only player listed ahead of Jaff), 7th in HR, and 3rd in walks (behind teammate Allan Dykstra and Darnell).

Commentary
If you aren’t stoked about the future of the Padres, you aren’t paying attention. Geoff Young and I drove to Lake Elsinore Saturday and watched the Storm play. On the way home we discussed what players would be manning all 8 starting fielding positions, 5 starting pitchers, and a closer for the 2013 Padres (we allowed any player in the organization – as well un-signed draftees). You can go at least 2-deep at every position (except pitchers) and have what looks to be a solid club. Obviously they are not all going to pan out, but nor are they all going to flame out. I’ll post mine tomorrow… What’s your 2013 Padres lineup look like?

Commentary
Edinson Rincon received high praise from Baseball America in their July 17 Prospect Hot Sheet and I noted that here on Friday. After posting that, I saw on MadFriars.com that Denis Savage talked to a scout about the Eugene squad and the scout had this to say about Rincon:
“I wouldn’t trade that guy for anything,” the scout said. “He has tremendous tools at the plate and makes it look easy. He is strong, has a great approach, and will hit a ton of homers one day.
“The only thing he needs is for someone to hit him a million ground balls. I kind of think his lower body hasn’t caught up to his upper body. It looks like his legs don’t know how to move that frame. I think he will be fine defensively, especially with that bat.”
Nice!
I do not like unearned runs. They are an unknown variable that can potentially compromise my analysis. In Monday night’s Eugene Emeralds at Tri-City Dust Devils tilt, Nick Greenwood and his defense got into trouble. Here is the action from the bottom of the fourth (from the MiLB.com recap):
- Kent Matthes reaches on fielding error by third baseman Vincent Belnome.
- Joseph Sanders flies out to center fielder Jason Codiroli.
- Ben Paulsen singles on a ground ball to right fielder Ty Wright. Kent Matthes to 3rd.
- With Orlando Sandoval batting, wild pitch by Nicholas Greenwood, Ben Paulsen to 2nd.
- Orlando Sandoval walks.
- Austin Rauch called out on strikes.
- Alexander Feinberg singles on a ground ball to left fielder Matt Vern. Kent Matthes scores. Ben Paulsen scores. Orlando Sandoval to 2nd.
- Joey Wong reaches on fielding error by second baseman Dean Anna. Orlando Sandoval scores. Alexander Feinberg to 2nd.
- Tim Wheeler strikes out swinging.
As you can see, Mathes reaching base was no fault of Greenwood’s, however, Greenwood contributed with a wild pitch, a walk, and a single. Because of all the un-earned runs, I cannot justify putting the outing in the Pitchers of the Day list.
Here is Nick’s line from Monday night:
5.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR
Chris Fetter is an older (collegiate senior) draftee at 23 years old. So he needs to move quickly. After 22.2 innings in the short-season Northwest League, the Padres promoted Fetter to Low-A Midwest League.
How do you rank/rate a guy like Brad Brach? It used to be that you developed starting pitchers and if they didn’t succeed as starters at the highest levels of the minors THEN you tried them as relievers. Now teams draft and develop pitcher as relievers from the beginning. Brad Brach certainly hopes the Padres believe in the latter paradigm… On the negative side of the equation, Brach features a fairly average fastball and changes speeds off that and he is old for his league (23). On the positive side, Brach has thrown 44 innings so far this season and has allowed 19 hits, 8 walks, and 1 home run compared to 61 strikeouts… Seriously, top 20? 25? 30? Somewhere below that?

Anthony Bass left the game after pitching one inning tonight.
Michael Watt relieved Bass and had a nice outing but had one of those auto-exclusions (more walks than strikeouts):
4.2 IP 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR
Programming Note:
I originally planned to get all 8 positional rankings done this week. Work and personal stuff (my mom is in town) have made that an impossibility (Mom, that doesn’t mean I’m not happy you’re here). I will wrap those up early next week…

Commentary
Galvez is hitting .400/.526/.578 with 8 XBH (all doubles), 7-2 in stolen base attempts, and a 10/9 BB/SO ratio… It’s early, but you couldn’t even hope that a 17 year old would be hitting that well against 18-22 year olds.
Edinson Rincon was signed by the Padres in May 2007. It only seems he has been in the system longer. His 2009 playing age is 18 (he will turn 19 on Aug. 11). This makes his current success (.356/.482/.600) all the more impressive.
I like Chad Huffman – a lot. But it’s going to be hard to break into the big league club as a left fielder.
Matthew Jackson has thrown 15.1 innings so far this season. He has allowed only 5 hits and is yet to allow a run…
So how many of us really know how good Brad Brach is or may be? Chew on these numbers for a minute: 37 IP with 18 hits and 1 HR allowed and 7 BB issued (he also has 51 punchouts in those 37 innings)… Brach has a 0.68 WHIP and a 1.46 ERA. Brach is not your prototypical power-arm; he tops out around 90-91… But he is definitely getting it done. He’ll be interesting to watch in coming years as he advances through the system.
Adys Portillo roughed up early in Tuesday night’s contest (4 ER in 1 IP) before settling down – allowed 1 more run in next two innings.

Commentary
Okay, can we get excited about Jonathan Galvez now? Galvez hit .272/.449/.370 last year as a 17 year-old in the DSL it’s too early to make a big deal about these numbers but so far (9 games) he’s hitting .433/.541/.600. He has 5 XBH (all doubles) in those 9 games. Last year, in 54 games, Galvez had 9 XBH (5 2B, 1 3B, and 3 HR).
This system has so many outfielders…
Who is Matthew Jackson? I don’t know either, but I intend to find out.
Adys Portillo had another semi-rough outing. (4.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR) but I’m actually encouraged. He is only 17 years old, he is pitching against many guys who were in college just 2 months ago, and despite giving up too many hits and too many walks he is keeping the ball in the park.
Yikes, Schmidt got torched (1.2 IP, 7 ER)!
