Padres MiLB, September 9, Players of the Day; Playoff Edition
Playoffs!
Hitter(s) of the Day
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-4, R, BB
Cedric Hunter (AA): 2-3, 2 2B, 2 BB – hat tip: Bob
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Simon Castro (Low-A): 6.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Brad Brach (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Ernesto Frieri (AA): 6.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Fort Wayne won 3-1 and San Antonio and Lake Elsinore each lost by one 1-0 in 11 innings for San Antonio, and 6-5 for Lake Elsinore.
Simon Castro and Brad Brach and two other pitchers combined for a 2-hitter.
Frieri get zero love as a prospect. He has only allowed 125 hits in 147 innings (regular season plus Wednesday’s playoff game) and has a 7.6 K/9. On the down-side, he has a 3.97 BB/9. I’m not sure he’s a future starter, but I like him a lot as a reliever.

Cory Luebke (AA): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO, 1 HR
Commentary
Galvez has been trending in the wrong direction (1.148 OPS in June, .927 in July, and .792 before Tuesday’s contest in August and batting .162 over last 10 games). It’s nice to see him have a good night at the plate.
This is a recap/expansion of a conversation I had with the Godfather of Padres bloggers, Geoff Young: Edinson Rincon just turned 19 years on August 11. I am a September baby. When I started elementary school in North Dakota you had to turn 6 by September 1 to be in the first grade. I missed that by a few weeks. So by the time I was a high school senior, I was 18 in September of my senior year of high school. So if Edinson was like me (and chances are, as an August baby, he would be a year ahead of someone like me but the point still works, so bear with me) he would be in his first summer out of high school – much like Donovan Tate and/or Everett Williams. Now look at the success Rincon is having and the fact that he has 330+/- professional at-bats and a career .293/.409/.430 line (even more at-bats – but a worse line if you consider his DSL AB’s). Tate will rank ahead of Rincon on virtually every prospect list published (including mine) but should he? With the success and experience Rincon has we are probably still selling him short.
On August 17, many Padre fans raved about the fact that we signed all three of top (at that point) still unsigned draftees: Tate, Williams, and Sampson. There was very little fanfare however, about the signing of Jorge Reyes. Jorge doesn’t deserve the same adulation that the three high schoolers do, but he’s not an insignificant signing either. If we rate the draftees according the money they signed for, the Padres got one first-round pick: Tate, one first-supplemental: Williams, one second: Sampson, one third: Sullivan, two fourths: Reyes amd Needy, and one fifth: Hagerty. Reyes didn’t have the K-rates (in college) that I like, but he is a legitimate prospect.
Cory Luebke was rated by at least one scout as one of the better prospects in the California-Carolina High-A All Star Game. If you’re not paying attention, shame on you.

Padres MiLB, August 24, Players of the Day
Hitter(s) of the Day
Edinson Rincon (SS): 2-4, HR, R, 3 RBI, BB, SO
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 3-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SO – also had OF assist at home
Lance Zawadzki (AA): 2-4, 2B, R
Chad Huffman (AAA): 3-5, 2B, R, SO
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Keyvius Sampson (Rookie): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR – pro debut
Chris Fetter (SS): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Alexis Lara (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Everett Williams made his professional debut tonight as well going 0-3 with a walk, 3 strikeouts, and a stolen base. He’ll figure it out – quickly I’m guessing.
It is an automatic exclusion from Pitcher of the Day if you walk more hitters than you strike out. As such, Castro’s 5.0 innings of shut-out baseball were wiped out by 3 walks vs. 1 strikeout. Still, Simon Castro lowered his ERA to 3.57.
In the Weekend Edition I mentioned that Lara continues to impress. Breaking it down:
April: 9.72 ERA
May: 5.02
June: 2.70
July: 0.50
August: 0.82
From June 1st Lara has a 1.15 ERA in 39 innings has allowed only 1 home run, 16 hits, and 12 walks while striking out 48.

Padres MiLB, August 13, Players of the Day
Hitter(s) of the Day
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-4, HR, R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 SB – Have a day!
Edinson Rincon (SS): 1-3, 2B, BB, SO
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Ernesto Frieri (AA): 6.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 9 SO, 0 HR
Evan Scribner (AA): 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Ernesto Frieri is often overlooked as a Padres pitching prospect – by myself as well. That is a mistake. Frieri’s season stats:
9-7 with 3.27 ERA in 121.0 IP with 101 H & 10 HR and a 51/100 BB/SO ratio
The walks and HR allowed are high but he is hard to hit… I do not think Frieri will be a Major League starter (I’d love for him to prove me wrong) but I do think he will have a Major League career.
This doesn’t fit into the above catagories but I didn’t want to omit it either:
Jake Peavy (AAA): 3.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR
I don’t have a lot of commentary, but I will… I usually post a mid-Friday piece discussing any Padre prospect on Baseball America’s Prospect Hot Sheet. I actually do not expect any Padres on this week’s list. But I will be chiming in as the Donovan Tate, Everett Williams, and Keyvius Sampson sagas play out.
Aug/099
Padres MiLB, August 11, Players of the Day
Hitter(s) of the Day
Cameron Monger (Rookie): 4-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R, CS – Okay, I give in. Here he is…
Jonathan Galvez (Rookie): 2-5, 2B, R, SO
Jason Hagerty (SS): 3-4, 2B, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 3-5, 2 R, BB, CS – hitting .312/.410/.480 post All Star
Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-4, HR, 2 R, 3 RBI, BB, 2 SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-4, R, RBI, BB, SO
Matt Clark (High-A): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, 2 SO
Pitcher(s) of the Day
Alexis Lara (Low-A): 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 0 HR
Chris Fetter (SS): 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR
Commentary
Matt Clark is an interesting hitter to look at deeper than his surface statistics (combined: .272/.353/.489). He’s hitting better in the hitter-friendly California League (.281/.354/.497) than he did in MidWest League (..266/.352/.484); which is not surprising. Another thing that isn’t too surprising when you think about it – the question is, “Did you think about it?” I know I didn’t… The Cal League is known for being a hitters’ league, but most people are unaware that The Diamond in Lake Elsinore is a pitchers’ park… To whit, Matt Clark is hitting .330/.396/.637 in the rest of the hitter-friendly Cal League while hitting .224/.307/.329 at home. Those dramatic splits do not speak well to Clark’s prospect status. We’ll reserve judgment until we have more than 167 total at-bats in High-A.
Alexis Lara is a relatively unknown Padres relief pitching prospect. He throws a 93-95+ fastball and according to a Randy Smith tweet (@ResPadres) has only allowed 1 run in past two months. Overall he has 3.49 ERA in 56.2 innings allowing 37 H and 4 HR with a 23/69 BB/SO ratio.
Chris Fetter wasn’t drafted with much fan-fare (except by loyal PRD reader, Mr. Dick Fetter and their family – just kidding!) but he has pitched quite well and deserves notice.
Fetter’s 2009 statistics (combined stats between Fort Wayne and Eugene):
3-1 with 2.49 ERA in 43.1 IP allowing 36 H and 0 HR with a 11/50 BB/SO ratio
Aug/092
Padres MiLB, August 3, Players of the Day
Hitter(s) of the Day
Nate Freiman (SS): 2-3, 2B, RBI, BB
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-6, 2 2B, 2 SO
Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 3-6, 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI
Lance Zawadzki (AA): 2-3, 2 R, BB, SB
Pitcher of the Day
Will Inman (AA): 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR – 1st start after demotion
Commentary
Adam Russell made his organizational debut tonight pitching a scoreless, hitless inning while allowing one walk.
Monday was August 3, 2009. The significance of that date is that the draft signing deadline was two weeks from Monday. First round pick Donovan Tate, second round pick, Everett Williams, and fourth round pick, Keyvius Sampson remain unsigned. Tate will almost certainly sign. And Grady Fuson recently suggested that the Padres may only sign one of Williams or Sampson. However, with the Padres trade of Peavy and the remaining 2009 salary coming off the books, the Padres should have additional funds to sign all three players. It will be interesting to see how the next two weeks go.

Evan Scribner (AA): 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 SO, 0 HR – 18 saves
Commentary
Brad Brach gave three hits and two runs (earned) Tuesday night – the sky is falling! Run everybody!
Paul R. and I were at Lake Elsinore last night, Schmidt looked much less efficient than his 2-walk night suggests. However, he also showed off his big curve and made Inland Empire hitters look silly taking called strike three’s. You all know I’m a believer…

Castro has a 2.68 ERA over his last 10 games with only 40 hits allowed in 50.1 innings during those 10. He also has struck out 65 hitters while walking only 9… Pitcher of the Month? I know, he wants to join the TinCaps reunion down in Lake Elsinore (Schmidt, Bass, Darnell, Carroll, Clark).
(Late night combined with early start at work – I’ll add links later and post the Five Questions later as well.)

Padres MiLB, July 22, Players of the Day

Edinson Rincon (SS): 2-4, HR, R, 5 RBI, SF
Blake Tekotte (Low-A): 2-5, 2B, R, RBI, CS, PO
Beamer Weems (High-A): 2-5, 2B, R, RBI

Ernesto Frieri (AA): 7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB,
Commentary
This is Edinson Rincon’s world. The rest of us are just spectators.
Tekotte by month:
April: .224/.322/.276
May: .202/.250/.303
June: .348/.446/.609
July: .329/.407/.506
Overall: .272/.355/.421
Sawyer Carroll still doesn’t get much pub but he’s hitting .315/.405/.470 between Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore with 30 doubles, 3 triples, and 6 home runs and is 17 for 23 in stolen base attempts.
Michael Watt will not make my top 25. In fact, he’ll probably miss out on the next 5-10 slots as well… However he throws in the 90s and some think he’ll pick up a few ticks on his fastball… He’s definitely someone to keep your eye on.

Anthony Bass left the game after pitching one inning tonight.
Michael Watt relieved Bass and had a nice outing but had one of those auto-exclusions (more walks than strikeouts):
4.2 IP 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 5 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR
Programming Note:
I originally planned to get all 8 positional rankings done this week. Work and personal stuff (my mom is in town) have made that an impossibility (Mom, that doesn’t mean I’m not happy you’re here). I will wrap those up early next week…

Drew Cumberland has had problems staying healthy. Leaving a game from an injury can’t be good for the shortstop prospect. He sat out Sunday’s contest as well.

Commentary
Allowing more walks than strikeouts is an auto-exclusion for Pitcher of the Day but Will Inman’s outing deserves mention… His performance goes here:
5.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO, 0 HR (Corrected)
