Padres MiLB, September 10-14, Players of the Day; Playoffs!

Playoffs!

People, sorry I haven’t posted in a few days. I have been real busy with work and parenting (wife was out of town).

Thursday, September 10, 2009

Hitter(s) of the Day

Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R, BB, SO

Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-5, HR, 2 R, RBI, SO

Cole Figueroa (Low-A): 2-3, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Wynn Pelzer (High-A): 7.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 7 SO, 0 HR

Will Inman (AA): 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR

Evan Scribner (AA): 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0 HR

Commentary

I am certain we will see Evan Scribner in big league uniform at some point. That said, Pelzer and Inman have higher upsides. It is good to see productivity in playoff situations from all three hurlers.

Hitter of the Day

Eric Sogard (AA): 3-5, R, 2 RBI, SO

Cedric Hunter (AA): 3-5, 2B, 3 RBI

Pitcher of the Day

n/a

Commentary

Eric Sogard’s numbers took a hit this season (in an extreme pitchers’ park) but he still hit .293/.370/.400 with more walks than strikeouts (road: .320/.406/.436, home: .267/.335/.366).

Hitter of the Day

Dan Robertson (Low-A): 2-6, 2B, R, RBI, SO

Jaff Decker (Low-A): 2-5, HR, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 SO

Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-5, 2 2B, R, 2 RBI, BB, SO

Pitcher(s) of the Day

n/a

Commentary

Good to see Decker with a big game for the playoff TinCaps.

Hitter of the Day

Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, 2 R

Allan Dykstra (Low-A): 2-4, 2 2B, 2 R, 2 RBI

Pitcher(s) of the Day

Stiven Osuna (Low-A): 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO, 1 HR

Commentary

Dykstra came on strong to end the season. It will be interesting to see if he reverts to his ugly 75% of season numbers or if he builds on his fantastic final month.

Hitter of the Day

Vince Belnome (Low-A): 2-4, 2B, R, RBI, 2 SO

Castro is a stud (Midwest League strikeout king).

Perhaps we’ll see Castro get 1 more start (as Game 5 starter?) as Tin Caps advance to the Midwest League best-of-5 finals …

I agree, if the series goes 5, he should get another start… If either team wins it early, then no… There will be road-trips to Lake Elsinore this next summer to see him, that’s for sure!

    Flashes Speed

    Luis Durango Profile

On Wednesday afternoon, the San Diego Padres unveiled their latest speed merchant, outfielder Luis Durango, who was second in the Double-A Texas League with 44 steals.
    The 23-year-old, 5-foot-8 Panamanian has sprinter’s speed.

“I wouldn’t describe that as speed,” outfielder Tony Gwynn said of Durango. “That’s more like flying.”

Said shortstop Everth Cabrera: “I like my speed, but I’d love to have his speed.”

Added veteran catcher Henry Blanco: “I relate it to Carl Crawford speed.”

In his first major league start Wednesday afternoon, Durango had two bunt singles, a swinging bunt single, a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt. In fact, he bunted in each of his first four major league at-bats.

“That’s an exciting weapon he has,” said Padres manager Bud Black. “He can flat-out run.”

Padre questions from Kevin Goldstein’s BP chat today:

Scott (San Diego): Padres have been promoting a lot of the prospect pipeline to the bigs this year. Any players left in AA or AAA to be excited about?

Kevin Goldstein: PLENTY. If I had to give a great leap forward to one team rather than players, it might be the Padres. Players to watch at every level.

Jim H. (Golden, CO): How good of a prospect is James Darnell? Can you put him in some context like Top 100, or how he compares to other 3B prospects? Is he a 3B long-term?

Kevin Goldstein: I’m a big Darnell fan, I think bigger than most. Fantastic approach, good swing, above-average power — lots to like offensively. Defensively, he’s very frustrating, as he’s a really good athlete, but a really bad third baseman.

JH (Berkeley): Craig Italiano seemed to take off in a major way when San Diego shifted him to the bullpen. Do you see him as a closer candidate?

Kevin Goldstein: If he can stay healthy, he’s at least got some set-up man possibilities.

Wow!! Durango can just fly! That highlight video is pretty amazing. Not too many guys who can bunt every time up and go 3/4.

    Towers out?

The Padres, under new CEO Jeff Moorad, are considering an organizational shakeup that could include replacing Kevin Towers, baseball’s longest tenured general manager, according to sources in San Diego.

The decision has not been made, according to Moorad.

“We’re continuing our evaluation and assessment of multiple parts of the organization, baseball included,” Moorad said in an email. “At this point, Kevin is our general manager, and is under contract through the 2010 season.”

James Darnell was sent home on Tuesday and has not been able to participate in baseball activities. The third baseman has battled through back pain since the playoffs began in Lake Elsinore, explaining his absence in that series.
