The Eugene squad started slowly but has really come lately. Hegerty looks like he can hit (of course we won’t know for certain until he faces tougher competition).

I took in the Lake Elsinore Storm game Sunday with frequent commenter and PRD de facto webmaster, Paul R. (a minor league expert in his own right). We both were surprised by the athleticism displayed by both Danny Payne and Brad Chalk. Unfortunately, the top hitting prospect on the club, James Darnell, did not play. If you don’t make to The Diamond several times in a season, you should. It’s a great venue, lots of fun, and a lot less expensive than a trip to Petco Park.
Kluber looked pretty good… The defense behind him was awful.
Beamer Weems looked INCREDIBLY smooth at short. That kid can play.
Met Wynn Pelzer. I’ve got a new feature coming to PRD on Tuesday. You’ll see Pelzer’s name in that new feature on the site Tuesday – even he doesn’t know why…

I know he’s not a major prospect but I’m curious how Keoni Ruth looked. Did he look comfortable at second? How was his approach at the plate? I see he doubled, walked and had a ribeye. Thanks.

It’s nice to see Hunter’s name show up and Sogard is putting together a heck of a season. I’d like to see him get a shot sometime next year.
I’m headed up to The Diamond this Thursday to check out the team. It is definitely a great place to take in some baseball. I’m looking forward to seeing some of the recently promoted guys, and possibly our new pitcher, Italiano.

I was at Rincon’s 2-for-4 game on Friday night … both his hits were strong ABs with very solid contact at points in the game when other batters were not getting good ABs … so … I was impressed … not eye-popping impressed … but encouraged … didn’t see anything outstanding in Hagerty … got to see both Fetter and Sullivan pitch … both looked “above average”, but far from eye-popping … inconsistent (ie. plenty of good stretches, but also periods of ug) … this Emeralds team has nothing for me to get excited about compared to many of the recent past (that featured Khalil Greene, Chase Headley, Matt Antonelli, Kellen Kulbacki, Mat Latos, etc) …

You nailed it David, he’s not a major prospect but he did look good – that double he stroked was a nice hit. He didn’t look good, however, in the field. He botched a would-be double and didn’t get either out (led to 1 of the 2 unearned runs). He just doesn’t hit enough to be considered ahead of Sogard, Zawadzki (if he moves off SS), Figueroa, etc. and he isn’t special enough to be considered a defense-first middle infield utility player (a la Beamer Weems)…
You look at how few high school players play in college, and few college players play in the minors, and how few minor leaguers play in High-A, and how many of those guys don’t hit as well as Ruth does – you have to tip your cap to him. He’s just not a major league prospect for the Padres…
