Latos, Zawadzki, and Luebke Honored

Padres’ Mat Latos made Baseball America’s Mid-Season All Star Team. BA offers high praise (if not completely accurate) saying, “One of the minors’ most electric arms, Latos already has jumped to Double-A in his first year in full-season ball.” Actually this is his second year of full-season baseball, he just only had injuries and only tossed 56 innings. Never-the-less, Latos is impressing and it is good to see him receive this level of praise.

Lance Zawadzki and Cory Luebke made their All Surprise Team. BA said, “A switch-hitter with the fine plate discipline typical of a Padres prospect, Zawadzki has hit .371/.459/.543 since being promoted to San Antonio in late May.”

 And:

The Padres tried to put Luebke on the fast track after drafting him in the supplemental first round in 2007 out of Ohio State. He wasn’t ready, and had to go back to the Midwest League last year, but he’s returned to form this year, earning his way to Double-A after going 8-2, 2.34 in the Cal League.

I’m glad that “fine plate-discipline” is becoming a hallmark of Padres prospects. Here’s hoping that Donovan Tate and Everett Williams will be able to combine that skill with their athleticism when they get into the system.

When every level is 1st or 2nd in its league in walks (as it was in 2008 – or something like that) the organizational reputation for plate discipline gets a bump…
